WHAT'S COMING IN 2006
At the war memorial on School Hill, the view is almost medieval, or reminiscent of the 'Lord of the Rings' perhaps. 1,000 flaming torches fill the night with their eerie glare; acrid smoke hangs in the autumn air from the torches and the firework set-pieces as each Bonfire Society comes up in turn to pay their respects to the dead of two world wars.
Early on the evening of 5th November, Rocket FM's Rupert Lloyd-Thomas (right) is oblivious to the photographer as he tries to portray the spectacle of Bonfire Night in Lewes from the forward studio, both to the local audience on 87.8 FM and to the listeners abroad via Rocket FM's 'world service' on the internet.
Rocket FM is the independent community radio station for Lewes and the Ouse Valley and on 5th November we mount a marathon live 'special', reporting from the town centre and later from each of the firesites, as the finale to our coverage of the local scene. This year will see the sixth broadcast, beginning on 20th October.
Rocket started in 2001 and aims to cover the many facets of life in Lewes and the many points of view of its inhabitants, during a two to three-week run on air, depending on how far our precarious funding will stretch. A hallmark of the station is the local guests who appear to talk about a wealth of issues and organisations. Why not be one of them yourself this year? Rocket is open to all and you can contact Rocket right here on our website, where you can also view the programme schedule, request a dedication, sign the guestbook or join Rocket and volunteer!
Rocket is run entirely by volunteers, many of us busy people with day-jobs to hold down. You could join us and have fun while learning about the world of broadcasting. Rocket's Chairman Andy Thomas says:
"People of all ages and backgrounds are welcome to get in touch with us; everybody has a useful contribution to make, but be warned, you may get bitten by the radio bug!"
The Rocket programme schedule is on this web site now - take a look at the many specialist music shows of all genres, in the evenings and at the weekends.
Everyone wishes Rocket FM another successful run on air. Lewes needs and deserves its own radio station!
